Find a Like-Minded Community
One of the hardest things about navigating through ADHD is reconciling the feeling of being the âonly person in the world to feel like this.â
You arenât alone. What you are experiencing is legitimate and difficult, and often what you need most is just the validation that this neural chaos is a shared experience. One of the reasons I got on social media in the first place was to find a home. I wanted to find a community and the support of people who experienced the same things I was going through. I was blown away. The ADHD community is so incredibly powerful and has provided me with a very happy, secure spot to learn and share.
Sharing your experiences with other ADHD adults can slice through that isolation and give you hope that you can succeed alongside this diagnosis. And hereâs the great thing about online communities: They can be as tailored as you like. You can find social media pages, groups, or forums that discuss broad strokes or dial in to niche topics. There are specialty supports for people who are grappling with finding a name for their symptoms, people who donât have access to a physician and are trying to make behavioral modifications, people searching for the next step after recognizing signs in their child, and infinitely more.
There are even in-person events that can help provide support based on your unique needs. There are programs like Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) that sponsor regional networking and educational events. Schools and colleges can also provide a wealth of information on groups, meetings, and networking opportunities. And if there arenât any, start one! There is such a need for support and an underlying yearning to âfind your peopleâ that any group you started would fill up quickly and be such an asset to the community.
